5 Things Parents Should Know About ‘Dunkirk’

He’s a British man on a World War II mission, but his weapon of choice isn’t a pistol or rifle. It’s a yacht, and hundreds of other British citizens are taking their own boats and joining him on his journey.

Their goal: cross the English Channel, avoid Nazi fighter planes, and rescue more than 330,000 Allied troops that are surrounded by German soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk, France. If they’re successful, the Allies will survive to fight another day. But if they fail, then Hitler likely will conquer the rest of Europe before the United States even enters the war.

Dunkirk (PG-13) opens in theaters this weekend, giving us a riveting account of one of the largest evacuations in human history. In May and June of 1940, Hitler seemed close to a quick victory when his army cornered hundreds of thousands of British, French and Belgian troops on a beach outside a French city. But the British Royal Air Force provided just enough cover to allow hundreds of small boats to ferry the Allies off the beach and onto larger ships.

It’s often called the “Miracle at Dunkirk,” and if it hadn’t succeeded, the world likely would be a very different place.

The movie was written, directed and co-produced by Christopher Nolan and – minus a couple of exceptions (such as Harry Styles) – features a cast of mostly unknown names.
