Feeling Behind In Homeschool? Four Ways To Reclaim Your Sanity Right Now

March and April can often feel like a homeschool mom’s worst enemy. It’s during these spring-has-sprung months of the year that we are more apt to feel up against the wall with the pace and schedule of our homeschooling efforts. We may feel frantic and worried about “being behind.” Now’s the time many of us realize our best laid homeschooling plans have been made into rubble and we’re secretly worried we will still be doing school come July.

When we feel like we’re behind, we tend to get frustrated, and sometimes even short tempered. Our children pick up on this, too. They find themselves feeling overwhelmed, irritated, and just plain tired of school. What can you do to get everyone “back on track” and feeling less frustrated?

Four Ways To Reclaim Your Sanity Right Now

  1. You’re the boss.

Ultimately, you are in charge of your daily schedule. So, with that in mind, you have the tools to make a change. Make adjustments in your schedule and life right now (that fit your unique needs) and then stick with them. Remember the guidelines in pre-planned curriculum are just that … guidelines. Not absolutes. Make your curriculum work for you, not the other way around.

  1. Remember WHY you do what you do.

We each choose homeschooling for different reasons. But near the top of the list, most of us chose home education because we want our children to love learning and to learn well.  If we are harried, frustrated, and worn down, we’re not imparting a love of learning to our children. Get back to your first love.

  1. Quit comparing.

If you want to homeschool without losing your mind, you simply must come to terms with imperfection. It’s okay to repeat material and even “get behind” –  I promise. Don’t compare yourself to other homeschooling families. Your family is unique. Your homeschool is unique. Embrace who you are… and roll with it.

  1. Celebrate forward progress.

You don’t have to complete every lesson, page, or activity in a book. Mastery of a skill is what you’re looking for, not completion of a book. (Here’s a secret – even in public and private schools it is extremely rare to finish every page of a textbook.) Adjust as necessary and celebrate forward progress. Skip an unnecessary chapter. Don’t do the lessons that are pure review unless your kids need the review. Skim over a lesson. Cut out the superfluous stuff you don’t really need to waste time on and move forward!

At the end of the day, it’s our relationships with God and our families that matter most. Don’t let fleeting feelings of “feeling behind” sacrifice those precious ties you’ve worked so hard to create. Continue pressing forward in faith, remembering that if God has called you to it, He will see you through it!
