The beginning of this set of tracks looks like there is no hope for Ned and Gerald to escape the clutches of the Grand Inquisitor. Will they die for their faith or will something else happen? Keep listening to hear the exciting end of the audio drama.

Bible Memorization

  • Ned and Gerald are arrested and taken to Lima with charges of heresy. They are to be brought before the tribunal. Read in Matthew 26 about Jesus facing the Sanhedrin.
  • Gerald encouraged Ned by pointing out all they’d been through. He mentions the shipwreck. Who in the Bible experienced a shipwreck? Read about the account in Acts 27.
  • Ned shares with Gerald about his fear. Find twenty verses in the Bible that deal with fear and record them. Memorize five of them.
  • Jesus instructed us to pray to our Heavenly Father. Read the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13.


  • Look up the vocabulary words in a dictionary and record their meanings.
  • The Grand Inquisitor threatened to beat Ned and Gerald into placing their belief in the Catholic Church. With the help of a parent, find a biography about a Christian martyr. Read it together as a family and then write a two-page report about what you’ve learned.
  • Add to your report on Sir Francis Drake. What new things have you discovered through listening to the audio drama? Be sure to add them to your paper.
  • Record Sir Francis Drake’s Prayer in your paper and then memorize it.


  • Gerald talked about the moldy bread they’d be eating. With the help of a parent, use bread to create an experiment to see how mold forms. Check out some books from your local library to aid in your learning.
  • Research and learn how mold and penicillin are connected. Who is the scientist who made this discovery?
  • Horses were tethered and waiting on Gerald and Ned when they escaped. Learn more about these beasts.

Social Studies

  • What torture devices did the Grand Inquisitor threaten them with? Research and learn about other times in history when torture’s been used. Be sure to have a parent help you.
  • Sir Francis Drake was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. What does this mean? Who were the others that also completed this voyage? Research and learn about this important part in history.
  • Identify the Thames River on your map.
  • What did the Queen do for Sir Francis Drake on his ship when they returned to England?
  • Compare what you’ve learned by researching Sir Francis Drake with what you heard in the audio drama. What are the similarities? What are the differences?


  • Penicillin was discovered in 1928. How many years have passed since then?
  • How far is Lima from England? Calculate the miles and yards.
  • Sir Francis Drake said they met with storms from September 7-28. How many days did they face stormy weather? How many hours? How many minutes?
  • How many miles does it take to circumnavigate the globe?
  • Sir Francis Drake said his prayer in 1577. How many years have passed since then?


  • Research and learn more about penicillin and how it’s still used today. Report your findings to a sibling or friend.


  • Draw a picture of the torture chamber and dungeon.
  • Watercolor a picture of the horses that were waiting for Ned, Gerald, and Donna Anna.
  • Draw a picture of the queen knighting Sir Francis Drake.


  • Collect all the work from the Under Drake’s Flag unit studies you’ve completed and place it into one notebook. Share it with a friend.
