New Year’s Resolutions For Christians

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
-Proverbs 16:3

For many people, January is a time for setting goals for personal health, fitness and self-improvement. “Lose 50 pounds before summer! Work out every day! Only speak kind words to my family!” Unfortunately, we tend to abandon these lofty and often unobtainable goals before the calendar turns over to February.

This year, instead of setting a random resolution, why not ask for divine wisdom? Have you considered asking God what goals He has for you in the coming year?

It’s simple to get started. Take some time to pray and sincerely ask God for guidance and wisdom. Ask Him to help you set attainable goals and to reveal any areas where you need to work or improve. You can have peace in knowing that if it is God’s will for your life, He will enable you to accomplish it.

Need some verses to get you started? Try these:

1.  Pray for guidance and believe. – James 1:5-6
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”

2. Forgive those who have hurt you in the past year. – Colossians 3:12-13
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

3.  Take care of your body. – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

4.  Love others. – Mark 12:30-31
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

5.  Don’t be discouraged. – Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

6.  Help others in need – Matthew 25:40
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Last but not least, consider keeping a prayer journal this year. During your quiet time, write down your goals, prayers, requests, and any verses that help you stay focused. It doesn’t have to be fancy or perfect. You just have to take the time to do it. At the end of 2016, your journal will be a good reminder of God’s faithfulness to you throughout the year and always.
