‘Wonder’ Director Stephen Chbosky Reveals How His Own Kids Inspired Him To Make The Film

It was one of the most inspiring and family-friendly films of 2017 – so much so that a few schools even took field trips to watch it. It was Wonder (PG), and it told the story of a boy named Auggie with facial differences who enters school for the first time.

Its message about bullying has impacted millions – and it is now out on DVD and digital platforms.

Today’s guest on Words of Wisdom is Wonder director and screenwriter Stephen Chbosky, who tells us why he wanted to make the popular book into a movie and how the story has impacted his own life.

“[The book] was so moving to me,” said Chbosky, who added that his son’s birth sparked his desire to make the film. “… I had to make the world better for my kids.”

Chbosky also tells us:

  • How he found actor Jacob Tremblay (who played Auggie), and what Tremblay did to prepare for the role.
  • Why some of the scenes were emotionally difficult to shoot.
  • Why it was important to include Star Wars characters in the film.
