Festive Paper Lanterns

Light up your Independence Day holiday! These cute and easy paper lanterns make a great addition to your outdoor parties and celebrations. Simple craft paper and string lights are all you need to make this festive craft shine.

Step 1: Fold your paper.

Take a piece of paper and fold it in half lengthwise. You can use printer paper, cardstock, or scrapbook paper. The heavier the paper, the sturdier the lantern will be. Use colored or printed craft paper to make the lantern more festive.

You may want to decorate your paper with paper-edging scissors or hole punches. For July 4th, a star punch is a great idea! You can also add stickers or embellishments as you desire.

Step 2: Cut the paper.

Cut slits along the folded edge, about an inch apart, and be sure not to cut all the way to the end. The longer the slits are, the more light will shine through your lantern. However, the longer the slits are, the floppier your lantern will be. Play around with it and find what style you like best.

Step 3: Wrap and secure.

Take the two ends of the lantern and wrap them around to make a tube-like shape. Use a piece of tape or glue to close it. You can also use a stapler.

Step 4: Make a handle.

Cut a strip of paper to make a handle for your lantern. This way you can easily slide them on a string of lights. You can also use ribbon or string for your handle if you so desire. Attach the handle with glue, tape, or staples at the top of your paper lantern.

Step 5: Hang and enjoy!

Hang your lanterns on a string of Christmas tree lights, or something similar. Then display them wherever you would like. String along your porch railings or dangle them from the edge of a buffet table for a festive look.

*Because they are made of paper, we do not recommend using candles or open flames near the lanterns.
