Melted Crayon Hearts: A Fun Valentine Craft!

Got broken crayons? Don’t throw them away! Give them new life with this fun, quick and easy craft and gift idea.

Materials Needed:

  • Broken or old crayons
  • Heart shaped baking/candy molds (or muffin pans)
  • Oven mitt
  • Cooling racks or other surface to allow pans to cool
  1. Peel the paper off all of the crayon pieces. Break any large pieces of crayon into smaller pieces. (Kids of all ages especially like this part!) You may want to sort into piles of colors as you go, depending on what pattern of crayon you desire.
  1. Fill your heart shaped molds or muffin tins with broken crayons. Fill to the top – when the crayons melt the volume changes. Choose whatever color scheme you desire. Mixing colors will create a swirled or tie-dyed effect.
  1. Place into a 275-degree oven.
  1. Crayons will melt in approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven and the size of your molds, so keep a close eye on them.
  1. Remove from the oven. (Only an adult should do this part.) Sit on a cooling rack or other surface to allow the crayons to cool for about an hour.
  1. When the crayons are completely cool, invert the molds or tins and the crayons should fall right out!

You can now wrap your beautiful crayons and give them away as a special Valentine’s gift. They will work just like a regular store-bought crayon!
