How to Teach History Even When You Don’t Enjoy History

Everyone has academic areas of interest in which they excel. For some people, history is not their first (or even second) love. If you had a negative experience with history in school, you might even dread the thought of teaching such a boring subject to your children. Or perhaps you know the importance of history and want to pass that along to your children, but aren’t sure where to start. Let’s consider three ways to teach history effectively even when you don’t enjoy it.

Find People Who Love History
The best way to catch a vision for what great history learning can be is to observe someone who loves it! Their enthusiasm will likely rub off on you as you consider what they are doing and how it creates a love of history in their children.

Look for blogs and websites of people who love history and examine what they do. Read about their successful lessons, activities, and projects. Don’t feel pressured that you have to do everything that you read. You are looking for ideas that work for you and your family. Find a few people who have a similar educational philosophy and children the same ages as yours and spend some time learning from what they’ve written. This will make it easier to adapt what they have done for your own family.

Ask Your Children
Have you asked your children what they might like to learn? Teaching history to children is so much easier when they already have a strong interest in the topic. You might be surprised by their answers if you’ve never asked them directly!

As much as you can, incorporate their suggestions into your learning time. Look online for books and activities that fit with their ideas. Even if you are required by law to follow a rigorous schedule and curriculum, you can add additional things that especially interest your children.

Consider Teaching and Learning Styles
Everyone who teaches has a preferred way of doing things. Children have their own unique learning styles. The quickest way to be successful in teaching history and to make it easier on you is to determine where your teaching style and your children’s learning styles intersect.

There is no right or wrong way to teach history. The objective is simply to learn the material in a way that is meaningful for your family and meets the legal requirements in your state.  You can do notebooking, lapbooks, read alouds, journals, workbooks, or any other format that works for your children. It might take a little trial and error, but once you find the way your children enjoy learning, teaching history will be so much easier and more enjoyable.

Teaching history can be a lot of fun. History is full of fascinating people, thought-provoking events, and spine-chilling adventures. As you learn from others who love history and find ways to focus in on your children’s interests and abilities, teaching history won’t be something you have to dread. In fact, you might even discover that history becomes one of your favorite subjects!
