We Were Made to Create

In the very beginning, we were created in God’s image.  In Genesis 1:27, it says, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him.”  So we have in us a natural, built-in desire to create as God did.  Of course, we can’t create by merely speaking like God when He said, “Let there be light” and there was light.  But, God tells us in Genesis to take dominion over everything on earth.

God gave us the ability to be creative with such an enormous task at hand.  Imagine Adam and Eve in the garden and their task of taking dominion over the plants and animals without a Home Depot to go to.  They had to be innovative and creative with their hands to craft tools and resources to stay alive.  Human beings are amazingly creative, just look around you!  Over the course of humanity, the advancements that we have made are simply astounding.

Though you or I may not feel like we are creative in the sense of artistic ability, we have been made to create.  We create families, welcoming homes, beautiful yards, friendships and businesses.  We create communities and relationships.  We create productive gardens and delicious dishes to place upon our tables.  We create hospitals, nursing homes, and orphanages to help those in need.  We create medicines and medical treatments to treat our “fallen” bodies.  We create technology that can help us take dominion and further God’s kingdom.  And lastly, we create songs and music, poetry, books and films that express our stories.  (The next time you watch a movie or read a book, try to identify the Creation aspect that we are talking about.)

As we go through life, how and what we are creating changes.  My life as a single woman was obviously very different than my current role as a mother of two children under the age of 2.  Creating a loving, stable home for my children has become the most important thing to me.  Creating relationships with other like-minded parents has become important to our family.   Creating a healthy marriage is something my husband and I are striving for.

One way my husband and I love to create is through gardening.   In these long, cold months of being stuck inside, we begin to dream and plan about what we want to create in our garden.  I personally love flowers.  The last several years we have planted a wildflower mix to the south of our large deck.  From the end of June until the first frost we have beautiful blooming flowers.

These brightly colored flowers not only make our yard look beautiful but we are able to enjoy fresh cut flowers in our home throughout the summer.  And you know what else?  We have fresh cut flowers to give to friends and family.   (Who doesn’t love receiving a fresh bouquet of flowers?)  My nephews also love to pick their own flowers and surprise their mother.  When we plant our garden and plant beautiful flowers we are using our creativeness that God gave us.

My husband loves to work in his shop and make things out of wood.  Maybe you are a writer, a painter, or a mother creating lesson plans for your children at home.  Maybe you are creating and providing order for your young family at home.  Maybe you are an accomplished musician, a baker or a photographer.

In your own life, in your own home and your own calling, what are you creating?  What kind of home are you creating for your children?  What interests are you helping create in your children?  What kind of relationships are you creating with your children?  What memories are you creating with your children?

No matter what stage of life you may be in or what your calling may currently be, may you “create” to the best of your ability and to the glory of God!
