Is Your Dad A Pirate? – Discussing Military Disabilities With Children

When a parent goes overseas to fight for our country and comes home injured, what should a child be told?

A new children’s book – “Is Your Dad A Pirate?” – seeks to provide some answers. It was written by author Tara McClary Reeves, whose own father, Marine Corps Lieutenant Clebe McClary, sustained injures in Vietnam.

Reeves is this week’s guest on Words of Wisdom. The book was inspired by her own experience and is aimed at any family that is looking to discuss with children the subject of disabilities – particularly ones caused during military service.

Reeves tells us:

  • How to deal with uncomfortable comments from strangers.
  • Why the mom in her book plays a prominent role.
  • What is was like to be raised by a veteran.
