The Worldview Of ‘Star Wars’ (Interview With Seminary Professor Timothy Paul Jones)

Forty years ago this year, Star Wars soared to the top of the box office charts, captivating adults and children alike with its space battles, light saber duels and good-vs.-evil plot.

Four decades later, the craze shows no signs of slowing. Fans were lining up at the theater five days prior to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is expected to be the top grossing film of 2017.

Why are we so nuts about Star Wars – and what should we teach our children about its worldview? That’s the topic of this week’s edition of War of the Worldviews.

Our guest is Timothy Paul Jones a seminary professor and a Star Wars fan who also is the author of the book “Finding God in a Galaxy Far, Far Away: A Spiritual Exploration of the Star Wars Saga.” Jones is the C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Family Ministry at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Jones talks theology and also lists his favorite Star Wars films, best to worst!

  1. Dear friends,
Thank you for this opportunity to comment on the interview of professor Timothy Paul Jones conducted by Mr Foust. Our family listened to the discussion together around the dinner table. We found it to be problematic.

To begin with, as far as I can tell, Dr Jones wants to redeem something unredeemable. The Star Wars story is written by a pagan and is presented on screen the same. In Truth, I find no warrant for this, rather our Lord refutes it in His Word. (2Cor.6:14-18; Eph.5:1-17; Matt.6:33,10:16, 24; 1John5:17,19; 2John6-11; Rom.1:18, 21-2:2; Rom.12:1,2; 2Tim.3:13-15, 4:5, 1Thess.5:5,6; Titus 1:9-16, 2:1,11-15; 1Peter5:8; Phil.4:8,9; Ps.119:37; Prov.24:23-26)

Moreover, the listener is not presented with a single Scripture passage to support Dr Jones’ ideas and why he would spend his time writing a book, in order to “find God” in the pagan writings of George Lucas, in the first place. Did I get that right? (2Tim3:16,17)

Another concern. In their discussion, it is obvious that Mr Foust and Dr Jones whole-heartedly promote the “experience” of the saga. Even our youngest was impressed by “two christian men who really liked Star Wars and wanted to tell everybody else.” Yet, from my perspective, the men neglect to esteem our Savior & the Gospel, to promote prayer, and to explain how it is they believe watching/reading Star Wars is beneficial & edifying for the earnest follower of Christ desiring to grow and be sanctified, in the Lord. (Rom.15:2, 1Cor.10:23,24,32,33; Col.3:16.)

In closing, this interview is not helpful to our family. Sadly, I believe that Mr Foust and Jones missed out on a blessing.

We will pray that God be pleased to grant these two brothers, and the producers of “Live the Adventure”, grace in this area.
